He has training and experience in acute and reconstructive surgery for the hand and wrist, including trauma and fracture management; nerve and microsurgery; arthroscopy; and a broad range of elective conditions.
He has special interests in wrist arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgery; targeted muscle reinnervation [TMR] to treat nerve-related pain; and surgery for the management of spasticity.
Associate Professor Brahman Sivakumar is an orthopaedic surgeon who has sub-specialised in the management of hand, wrist and peripheral nerve conditions.
After obtaining his medical degree from the University of New South Wales in 2007, Brahman underwent orthopaedic training at centres throughout NSW and QLD. He completed his surgical training in 2017, before sub-specialising in hand surgery via the Post Fellowship Education and Training [PFET] programme under the auspices of the Australian Hand Surgery Society.
Brahman has also completed the Carl Zeiss microsurgery fellowship at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India, and the International Wrist Centre [IWC] fellowship in wrist arthroscopy at the Institut de la Main in Paris, France. He was granted the Morgan Travel Fellowship by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons [RACS] to return to Institut de la Main and gain experience in the management of spasticity.
Brahman was awarded the 2024 Australian Hand Surgery Society [AHSS] travelling fellowship, and visited centres in the United States to study the use of targeted muscle reinnervation [TMR] in the care of upper and lower limb amputees. He has been awarded the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand [IFSSH] travelling fellowship for 2025.

In addition to his clinical practice, Brahman has a strong interest in research and academics. He has authored over 110 peer-reviewed publications and 2 book chapters, and had the opportunity to chair and present at academic meetings both locally and internationally.
Brahman has completed 2 masters degrees, and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, where he is undertaking translational research in phalangeal fractures.
He teaches registrars and fellows in his public hospital appointments, and serves as a learning advisor and independent learning project [ILP] supervisor for medical students at the University of Sydney. He is also the director of Esser Australia, a branch of the not-for-profit Esser Foundation that organises courses to further hand surgery education for future practitioners.
